Many workplace problems are not competence problems. They are alignment problems

– Carita Nyberg

In today’s increasingly complex professional world, organizations are searching for leaders who can do more than drive performance. They need leaders who can create clarity, strengthen human connection, understand motivation, and help people work together without wasting valuable energy on unnecessary friction. Carita Nyberg, Founder and Master Trainer of Keys2Balance, has dedicated more than two decades to understanding exactly what helps people and teams perform at their best.

Her journey began in the corporate world, where ambition, achievement, and high standards defined her early professional career. Starting in marketing and eventually becoming Head of Marketing at Fazer Amica, Carita understood the demands of professional success. Yet her experiences also revealed a deeper truth: outward success and personal wellbeing are not always the same.

Those experiences would eventually lead her to explore one of the most important questions in modern leadership: why do capable people sometimes struggle, and what helps individuals and teams truly thrive?

WHEN SUCCESS COMES AT THE COST OF ENERGY

Carita’s personal journey has played an important role in shaping her philosophy. Despite professional success, she experienced periods of feeling disconnected and close to burnout. These moments transformed the way she understood leadership, purpose, and balance.

“Success and wellbeing are not necessarily the same thing,” she explains.

A person can appear competent, responsible, and successful while internally spending enormous amounts of energy simply trying to keep everything going. For Carita, the solution was not necessarily doing less. It was learning to understand herself more deeply.

She began asking important questions about natural strengths, genuine motivation, and the expectations people place upon themselves. This insight became central to her work with leaders and organizations: sustainable performance requires understanding where energy comes from and where it is unnecessarily lost.

THE REAL CHALLENGE IS OFTEN MISALIGNMENT

One of Carita’s strongest observations is that many workplace challenges are not caused by a lack of competence. Highly capable individuals can still struggle to communicate, collaborate, and perform effectively together when there is misalignment.

Communication styles can differ significantly. People often communicate in the way they personally prefer and then wonder why others do not understand them. The same applies to motivation. What motivates one individual may have little meaning for another.

Sometimes, even a highly capable person may be in a role that requires far too much energy.

“Many workplace problems are not competence problems. They are alignment problems,” Carita says.

Her approach focuses on identifying where the friction is actually coming from. Once people understand the underlying cause, solutions can often become clearer and surprisingly practical.

THE CREATION OF KEYS2BALANCE

Founded in 2002, Keys2Balance emerged from Carita’s curiosity about human behaviour and her desire to transform deeper psychological understanding into practical tools for everyday leadership.

The real test is whether someone can use it tomorrow morning with their team.

Over more than 20 years, she has worked with over 20,000 people from dozens of countries. During this time, the Keys2Balance methodology has evolved through real workplace experiences and extensive exploration of different approaches and traditions, including the work of Jung and Gurdjieff.

The methodology consists of nine practical tools focused on communication, motivation, and wellbeing.

For Carita, however, the sophistication of a model is not what makes it valuable.

“The real test is whether someone can use it tomorrow morning with their team,” she says.

This practical philosophy has helped make her work relevant across industries, cultures, and organizational environments.

FROM FRICTION TO FLOW

Carita describes the transformation she helps create as moving from friction to flow.

The process often begins with awareness. A leader may suddenly understand why a particular conversation repeatedly goes wrong. A team may recognize that what they previously considered difficult behaviour is simply a difference in communication style. An individual may realize why a role that appears ideal on paper is actually exhausting.

The goal is not to eliminate all differences or challenges. Friction itself can provide valuable information.

The important question is what is creating it.

Once this becomes clear, communication can improve, misunderstandings can decrease, motivation can become better understood, and roles can be adjusted to better suit people’s strengths.

The result is simple but powerful: less energy is wasted on unnecessary conflict and more energy becomes available for meaningful work.

CLARITY DURING UNCERTAINTY

Periods of organizational change and pressure often create confusion. According to Carita, leaders may respond by communicating more, but that does not necessarily mean they communicate more clearly.

She encourages leaders to simplify.

What do we know? What do we not know yet? What matters most right now? Who is responsible for what? Who makes the decision?

Good leadership does not mean having every answer. Instead, it means being honest about uncertainty while providing enough clarity for people to continue moving forward.

Carita also recognizes that people respond differently to uncertainty. Some need facts and time to think, while others need discussion or a clear understanding of the next step.

Effective leadership therefore requires both clarity and an understanding of individual differences.

PERFORMANCE AND WELLBEING CAN GROW TOGETHER

Carita believes that organizations can achieve strong results while also protecting motivation and wellbeing.

People can perform against themselves for a long time through discipline, responsibility, and willpower. However, this eventually comes at a cost. Energy declines, motivation suffers, and performance can ultimately be affected.

“I don’t see wellbeing and performance as opposites. Quite the opposite,” she explains.

Sustainable high performance requires organizations to understand not only what people can achieve, but also what gives them energy and what continuously drains it.

This is where motivation, wellbeing, and performance become deeply connected.

A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE ON HUMAN LEADERSHIP

Having worked with people from dozens of countries and across many industries, Carita has discovered that fundamental human challenges are remarkably universal.

People make assumptions. They misunderstand one another. They want to feel valued. They react differently under pressure and are motivated by different things. Most importantly, people want to feel that their work matters.

Culture influences how these behaviours are expressed, which is why Carita adapts her language, examples, and approach to each environment.

Yet the essential questions remain the same: Who am I? What drives me? How can I understand others better? How can we work together with less unnecessary friction?

A VISION TO MULTIPLY IMPACT

Looking toward the future, Carita Nyberg envisions leadership becoming more human without becoming less ambitious.

As technology and artificial intelligence continue transforming the workplace, she believes understanding people will become even more important. Leaders will need to create clarity, connection, and meaning in environments changing faster than ever before.

Keys2Balance is now entering an exciting new chapter. After more than two decades of impact delivered largely through Carita and a small team, her vision is to build an international network of trainers, coaches, and partners who can bring the methodology into organizations, countries, and cultures around the world.

Her ambition is no longer simply to create impact through her own work, but to multiply that impact through others.

Carita Nyberg’s legacy is rooted in a powerful yet human vision: workplaces where people understand themselves and one another, use more of their natural strengths, and spend less energy on unnecessary friction.

In a world where leadership is becoming increasingly complex, her work offers an important reminder that clarity, alignment, purpose, and human understanding may be among the most powerful tools leaders possess.
